Part of what makes conspiracy theories comforting is that they isolate the evil of society into particular people. If the Bad Stuff is happening because of certain people, well, you can just get rid of them and everything will be fine. If it's happening because of a huge number of people just making a few mistakes daily, or doing what they think is right, what everyone TELLS them is right, even if it turns out to be wrong...that's a lot harder to deal with. That might require introspection. It could require arguing with friends and neighbors. It may be a completely intractable problem that can only go away if certain incentives change. That's a scary thought.
