City of the Dead - 21: the Land That Time Forgot, At the Earth's Core, and The People that Time Forgot
The brilliant Daniel Harper joins the amazing Lee Russell and the senile James Murphy for a discussion on the last ever Amicus films. Drunken pilots keeping a tally of the pterodactyls they're shooting out of the sky, scantily clad cave women, WW1 submarine soldiers, and Peter Cushing's gargantuan drill.

Remember how I had a podcast? All joking aside, I'm really, really proud of this one. Please join me in extending a very warm welcome to the wonderful Bob from RetroRGB. Bob has done tireless work gathering information on how to preserve every aspect of classic video games: Not just the systems and the games themselves, but the whole experience of retro gaming. From the best way to hook up your old consoles to a modern flatscreen digital HD TV to the best way to track down and safeguard a CRT to build your own personal arcade, Bob's website RetroRGB is a wellspring of everything you'd ever want to know about the technical side of video game history and preservation. Over the course of an hour and a half, Bob and I share our thoughts on the retro lifestyle, some of our favourite video game memories and talk about what keeps us coming back to the old classics and retro aesthetics year after year. This podcast is a real collaboration between RetroRGB, Eruditorum Press and the Forest of Illusions YouTube Channel. For the first time, I'm doing a proper crosspost: My YouTube viewers will get a video podcast (and, for the first time, get to see me in person), while fans of EP's podcast network get an audio-only version hosted, as always on the Pex Lives Libsyn (if that version isn't up yet when this goes live, it will be in the near future and I'll update the post accordingly). But more to the point, Bob was kind enough to not just guest on my show, but actually do all the technical work recording, mixing and uploading it too. I could not have gotten this out in time today were it not for him, so I wanted to give him an impassioned public thanks here as well. Some liner notes:

In this exciting one-off hear James trying to wing his way through a conversation he should have done more preparation for with the lovely and charming Mr Conrad Slater (@conradslater) about all things Mr Men. Lots of interesting stuff from Conrad on this little discussed phenomenon. I've sat on this recording for many months because the audio is a bit poorer than I like, but I think it's worth a listen. With an ailing Pex Lives crew, battling the elements, the general and precipitous downward spiral of what has laughingly been called the civilised world, uncooperative technology, and a pair of immune systems that have crapped out just when we needed them most, we have lashed ourselves to the wheel and sailed on into the raging storm of knackered nautical cliches. Kevin had to phone in his contribution because his laptop wouldn't connect to the internet so the sound quality isn't what we like it to be, but it is still listenable. We also went considerably shorter than we usually do. Shortening it further, hundreds of consumptive sounding coughs were edited out from the file, but some have slipped through. For all that as a disclaimer, we stand by this as something worth your time. It's probably the most-Doctor Who focused thing we've ever done, if that's what you like. Here we talk about William Hartnell's swansong as the Doctor and a little about the news that Peter Capaldi is leaving the revived show this year. Enjoy!

Kevin is joined in the Pex Lives recording bunker with friends-of-the-show Gene and Kim to begin answering the question: after the election, what is to be done? A statement From Gene, Kim and Kevin: We should not only organize on the basis of reacting to events as they transpire, but we must take the initiative and not allow them to keep us on the back foot. We will defend our existing gains by demanding more, by rejecting complacency. We need to build a movement around those demands in order to create the conditions for the new society. We should not stand for the mere restoration of liberalism, but for supplanting it. We should seek to secure not just the familiar rights, but real liberation founded on material equality. The immediate, short-term struggles must be understood in light of the long struggle. We have to demand what they cannot deliver. Amelioration is our priority, but we must not substitute reformism for reform. we have no interest in rescuing the Democratic Party from itself. We can use the party for as much as it is useful, but we must remember it is not a neutral tool, and neither is the state. These are organs of the ruling class. Their very structure presupposes rule by the capitalist class. So we must take care. We don’t have all the answers. We can see the broad sweep, but We're just as disoriented as anyone. We may come across as alarmist in the podcast. We don't mean to. We think we should prepare for the worst and consider what we’d do if it came to that, but we can't tell the future, and there are reasons to be optimistic. We also don't want to get anybody killed or hurt. Assessing risk and figuring out what you can do—that’s not for us or anyone to do for you. Just remember that whatever you can contribute will be useful, and stay safe. Your local organizations will probably have better ideas than we do. Oh, and one last thing: a shoutout to @PissPigGrandDad, who’s fighting for the revolution in Rojava. Solidarity with the YPG. Links: -Democratic Socialists of America. This is an unusual edition of not Pex Lives. We weren't able to get together and record your expected two hours plus of Dr Who related - tangentially Dr Who related - conversation because of, well, capitalism. Instead, what I've put together is somewhat akin to those Giant Annuals of comics you used to get as a kid, usually for Christmas. I thought the Pex Lives listenership might enjoy a little variety. With that in mind, I've got a conversation that Jack Graham, Kit Power, and Daniel Harper - who all of you know - had. It was unplanned and informal, just some friends shooting the breeze at half hour's notice. I've also got Gene Mayes and Kim Karr talking the first act of John Carpenter's career, from 1974 - 1981. A really good chat. Here's an article by Kit Power about the times that he talks about herein and the benefits of even a compromised Labour government over a Conservative one. http://gingernutsofhorror.com/my-life-in-horror/keep-it-up-son-take-a-look-a-what-you-could-have-won @thegenemayes @kimcreep @_Jack_Graham_@kitgonzo @danieleharper @jmcm1916

Yes, I use the Oxford comma. I use it because it is sensible, stylish, and clarifying. Oh, and this is Part 2 of Shabcast 23, featuring the continuation of my latest chat with Daniel Harper. I think the title is pretty much self-explanatory. That's my thing now. Self-explanatory titles. And Oxford commas. They're my thing too now. And irrelevant commentary on my own style. Self-explanatory titles, irrelevant commentary on my own style, and Oxford commas. See, they're nice aren't they? If that comma hadn't been there, before the 'and', it could've looked like I was saying I now make irrelevant comments about my own style and about Oxford commas. And clearly I would never comment irrelevantly about Oxford commas.

In this episode we talk about the 2006 Mike Judge movie Idiocracy, which is 'relevant' nowadays as loads of people have jumped to the wrong conclusions about the Trump phenomenon and clambered aboard the everyone's-an-idiot-nowadays-except-me bandwagon, using Idiocracy as a cultural touchstone. Daniel has little time for the film and isn't shy about saying why. And nor am I.

Also a bunch of Hugo Awards stuff, and generally one of the best Sandifer/Graham rambles to date. You can get Neoreaction a Basilisk on Kickstarter all through May.

This month, a special series of Eruditorum Presscasts as Phil sits down with various guests to be interviewed about his new book, Neoreaction a Basilisk. This week he's joined by David Gerard, who read the book in 2000 word chunks serialized as Phil was writing it, and who spent time in the trenches of LessWrong and reading neoreactionaries before it was cool.

Jack is joined by Kevin to talk The Matrix. At length. It's fair to say that neither of them are especially fond of it.
Oh, and here's a link to an article they mention.

This month, Jack is joined by Daniel Harper, one half of the married team behind the excellent Oi! Spaceman podcast, to talk about the Doctor Who series 8 classic 'Listen'... which Jack and Dan both like despite being Moffat-sceptics (to put it mildly). The discussion ranges as freely and widely as you'd expect. Here's Oi! Spaceman, which Daniel co-hosts with his wife Shana, and here's the OS blog. If you're not already a fan then check 'em out, 'cos they're great.
